Detroit is coming off a doubleheader split against Pittsburgh with the second game loss snapping a four-game winning streak. The Tigers are one game under .500 and well back in the American League Central as they trail Cleveland by 9.5 games. Jack Flaherty has been inconsistent but has put together five straight quality outings which is keeping this number down. Overall, he has a 3.84 ERA and a 2.91 xERA so he has exceeded expectations based on the metrics with a lot that due to his incredible 81:9 K:BB ratio but based on career numbers, this will come back to the mean. Nick Pivetta has been one of the best pitchers in the game going back to last summer as he is third in strikeout rate and third in strikeout-walk percentage among 135 pitchers that have thrown at least 80 innings since July of last season. Boston had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 7-2 series opening loss on Friday to fall back to one game over .500 and it dropped to 10-14 at home but has a big edge on the mound. Milwaukee remains in first place in the National League Central as it leads the Cubs by 2.5 games but it has been a pretty average stretch as the Brewers are just 9-10 over their last 19 games. After two solid starts to open the season, Nick Pivetta landed on the IL and in his return, his first start came in Atlanta and the Braves lit him up for five runs in four innings but he has recovered with two solid outings, allowing three runs over 11.2 innings. The Cubs are coming off 4-3 win on Tuesday to open this series and they are catching another solid number tonight to improve upon their 15-9 record at home. The Braves have been in a slump as they have dropped five of their last six games and now sit six games behind the Phillies in the National League East. They are obviously still one of the best teams in baseball and are favored for a reason but they are overpriced here. Max Fried is an elite starter but his command is a major concern this season. He has a career 17 percent K:BB percentage but it sits at just over nine percent this season as his walk rate is way up and his strikeout rate is way down and his 39:20 K:BB ratio shows that. Justin Steele started the season on the IL and he made his first start on May 6 and it was solid where he did not allow a run over 4.2 innings. He got shelled in his next two starts against the Pirates where he allowed 11 runs over 9.2 innings with the problem being he gave up five home runs and that is an anomaly as this has not been in as issue in his previous three seasons so we will see positive regression.
